چکیده

A MATLAB program was developed to invert first arrival travel time picks from zero offset profiling borehole ground penetrating radar traces to obtain the electromagnetic wave propagation velocities in soil. Zero-offset profiling refers to a mode of operation wherein the centers of the bistatic antennae being lowered to the same depth below ground for each measurement. The inversion uses a simulated annealing optimization routine, whereby the model attempts to reduce the root mean square error between the measured and modeled travel time by perturbing the velocity in a ray tracing routine. Measurement uncertainty is incorporated through the presentation of the ensemble mean and standard deviation from the results of a Monte Carlo simulation. The program features a pre-processor to modify or delete travel time information from the profile before inversion and post-processing through presentation of the ensemble statistics of the water contents inferred from the velocity profile. The program includes a novel application of a graphical user interface to animate the velocity fitting routine. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Tomography without Rays

We present two new techniques for the inversion of first-arrival times to estimate velocity structure. These travel-time inversion techniques are unique in that they do not require the calculation of ray paths. First-arrival times are calculated using a finite-difference scheme that iteratively solves the eikonal equations for the position of the wavefront. The first inversion technique is a di...

Use of a Multi-offset Borehole-radar Reflection Method in Fractured Crystalline Bedrock at Mirror Lake, Grafton County, New Hampshire

Multi-offset, single-hole, borehole-radar reflection surveys were conducted at the U.S. Geological Survey Fractured Rock Research Site at Mirror Lake, in Grafton County, New Hampshire. The study was conducted to evaluate the benefits of applying multi-offset seismic processing techniques to borehole-radar reflection surveys in fractured rock. The multi-offset reflection surveys were conducted i...

Vertical radar profiling: influence of survey geometry on first-arrival traveltimes and amplitudes

In vertical radar profiling (VRP), the receiver antenna is located within a borehole while the transmitter antenna is placed at varying offsets from the borehole. VRP surveys are primarily used to reconstruct subsurface georadar velocities by inverting direct-wave traveltimes. We examine the VRP technique and associated concepts that need to be considered when acquiring, analyzing and interpret...

SIPPI: A Matlab toolbox for sampling the solution to inverse problems with complex prior information: Part 2 - Application to crosshole GPR tomography

We present an application of the SIPPI Matlab toolbox, to obtain a sample from the a posteriori probability density function for the classical tomographic inversion problem. We consider a number of different forward models, linear and non-linear, such as ray based forward models that rely on the high frequency approximation of the wave-equation and ’fat’ ray based forward models relying on fini...
